What life is like in PNG

April 2001

Visiting PNG was so full of new experiences each day that it is hard to know where to start, I'll try to give you a taste...

The trip to Kundiawa took about an hour inland by four wheel drive. Along the way we were stopped at the Simbu (one of the 22 regions in PNG) by border police. This was a bit scarey at first, as I didn't know what to expect. They asked us all to get out of the car and, as it turned out, they were just lookemyou (pidjin for looking for... I think) for alcohol, as the Simbu region is a dry area- BORING!

Kundiawa has one of the 3 international schools that Doug and Sharron supervise. Shopping in the supermarket... Villages and settlements... wildness... children smiling and people waving all the time... getting stopped by the police to check for alcohol... buying fruit from people on the side of the road...
