Staying in Butterfly Valley

30 Sept - 5 Oct 2001

My first impression when I arrived Butterfly Valley, near Oludinez, was that of a hippy commune- with only vegetarian food and no facilities for life as we know it (like internet, phone, etc.). I walked into the eating area to meet up with an Englishman who could play the most amazing card tricks I've ever seen in my life (you could pay to see these!), then I sat out on the beach with a whole lot of other people and listened to a Japanese guy play the didgeridoo (sorry I can't spell it!) by the bonfire- better than most other people I've heard!

Butterfly Valley is a difficult place to leave...

Other highlights of my stay here included walking up the valley at the rear of the beach to Gorge's Place twice, to sample the excellent vegetarian food they make up there (very authentic!), reading, partying and just chilling out with friends met along the way.

Butterfly Valley has its own currency, called the Butterfly (... funny that??), to distinguish the guests from the tourists (ie. the people they REALLY rip off from those who get off lightly) who come in daily on loads of ferries.
