The problem with putting, say, a large image (ie. 1024 X 768) on the screen is that if you are viewing your screen with a resolution that is LOWER, then the image will not fit, it will go off the screen- or muck up the layout.
Most computer screens nowadays are using minimum screen resolutions of 800 X 600 by default, which is the equivalent of a 15 inch screen.
